Chemical peels were probably the original intervention devised for anti-aging and although the chemicals used have evolved tremendously since that time, their role in skin rejuvenation are still valuable and affordable.
Vitalize Peel:
Using retinoic acid, the Vitalize peel gently exfoliates the top layer of the skin. These peels create minimal if any downtime and are easily tolerated in an office setting. A series of 3-5 monthly peels is usually recommended to achieve the best results in skin texture, pore size, irregular pigmentation and mild acne scarring. Vitalize peels are also a great maintenance treatment following more aggressive facial rejuvenation.
Blue Peel:This Obagi chemical peel is a more aggressive exfoliation of the epidermis and penetrates into the deeper dermal skin layer. This is an affordable and safe way to achieve total skin resurfacing while improving skin texture, abnormal pigmentation and wrinkles. This peel can be performed in the office with a small amount of oral sedation. The beauty of the Blue Peel is that the old skin does not peel off until the new skin has already formed, making recovery virtually pain free. There is, however, downtime involving about 5-7 days. In general, blue peels are not as effective as lasers in wrinkle eradication as there is no heat generated in the tissue to stimulate collagen fiber contracture and formation. However, the affordability makes it a great alterative for patients on a budget. Potential adverse side effects are exceedingly rare but include hyperpigmentation and delayed healing.
