At times the solution for facial skin problems is gently renewing the top layer of the skin, the epidermis. Older technology in laser skin resurfacing was risky and traumatic to the patient, resulting in extended healing and potential complications. Skin after these treatments often looked "lasered" - waxy and shiny in complexion with unusually pale pigmentation and demarcation lines on the neck.
Fraxel is the latest generation of laser resurfacing, solving these problems and resulting in a totally natural and healthy complexion after treatment. The laser is applied "fractionally", laying down tiny microscopic ablation zones in the skin (similar in appearance to the pattern of a peg board) thus treating a limited surface area with each application (15-20% with each session).
This results in a procedure which can be performed in an office setting with only topical anesthesia. Although there is potential downtime as well as some facial pinkness and swelling – often the side effects are tolerable enough that daily errands and activities are not interrupted. This laser is applied in a series of treatments varying from three to seven over a period of several months resulting in gradual restoration of skin health. This laser is excellent for fine lines and wrinkles, skin discoloration (including melasma), acne scarring, enlarged pores, skin texture concerns, and extensive sun damage. These treatments are very safe with minimal potential adverse side effects.
Treatment Information: Each treatment will take about 1.5 hours. The majority of this time is waiting while the skin is numbing with a strong topical anesthetic. Remember to bring a good book with you to keep you occupied during this time. The treatment itself takes about 15-20 minutes. Patients report a spectrum of sensations during the treatments varying from totally painless to a "pins and needles" sensation to some discomfort from heat. Typically patients find the sessions very tolerable but if you do experience significant discomfort or are concerned about it, we can administer oral medication to help. If you choose this option please bring a driver. Sessions are usually performed monthly but can be done at different intervals depending upon the patient's requirements.
Adverse side effects are exceedingly rare but can include topical burns or scabs. If these do occur please notify your caregiver and apply topical antibiotic until they resolve. These usually heal without sequelae. If you have ever had a facial cold sore, you need to be on antiviral medication prior to each session to prevent an outbreak. Please notify your caregiver and we can give you the appropriate prescription.
